CEO’s Thoughts : 4 SIGNS IT’S TIME TO MAKE A MOVE

I often get question from my clients, “why do candidates move so often these days!?” Obviously, as candidates you don’t want to move so often because you could appear as a job hopper, money driven, or un-loyal. So when is it the right time and how often should one make the switch? Here are 4 telling signs it’s time to make a move

YOU’RE IN YOUR COMFORT ZONE

You’ve been in the same job for over 5 years. Your role has been the same. Clock in, clock out. Your boss is nice. Your colleagues are perfect. But you basically can do the job with your eyes shut! How do you then up-skill? Maybe it’s time to consider… Did you know that in the next 20 years 47% of job will go away (The Future of Employment, Oxford University)? If you’re hitting your 40’s, you should seriously consider your current situation. Because by the time you’re 45+ and 10+ years in the same job, employers are less likely to consider you. You might be viewed as unadaptable or even deadwood. Signs It’s Time To Make A Move

NO CAREER PATH OR OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NEXT STEP

As mentioned earlier, developing new skills become ever more important in the digital age where robots can now take over human jobs. So if your boss has been in the same role for 10 years and he’s not going anywhere … Maybe, just maybe you should consider? How about if your company has been the same size since you joined, how do you move up in the career ladder!? Other aspects such as how much does your boss value or appreciate your talent OR is your industry growing so you’re catching the wave? If the answers are NO, you should consider other options

AN OPPORTUNITY WITH BIGGER SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES CAME ALONG

You’ve been stuck in the same job for a while and one day a great opportunity came along. You always wanted to be a people manager, but because you don’t have direct experience, your current employer didn’t give you the opportunity. It’s chicken & egg situation. Another employer offers you the people manager role in which you lack the skills. Should you take it!? Heck Yes!

‘If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity
but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!’

(Famous quote by Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group).

If you’ve given back to the organization through strong performance and have exhausted your learning at the current company, maybe it’s time …

THE JOB OPPORTUNITY MATCHES WITH YOUR LONG-TERM GOAL

What’s your dream? Do you have one? Do you wish to own a restaurant one day? Possibly. You’re currently a sales manager selling furniture. Someone you know from Minor Food Group, the largest franchisor in Thailand to operate chain restaurants, offers you to become a Branch Manager of Burger King. Why not!?

Not only is it difficult to transition from an individual contribution sales role into a management position, in addition to switching industry, but someone is willing to take a risk on you!? Imagine the skills & knowledge you’ll gain from learning the standard operation procedure (SOP) from an international restaurant chain. It could serve as pretty much the experience required in order to fulfill your dream one day as a restaurant owner. Scare of failing? I dare you to take it. It’s your time to shine!
